William Berg, Dairyland president and CEO, said the co-op is also spendinv $400 million in in environmental controlk equipmentat coal-fired power plants and promoting energy including a program in whicj it gives away energy-efficient compactf fluorescent light bulbs. Dairyland is lookingh to investin 'green' technologies and expand its electricity generation from variouzs renewable energy sources, including wind, landfilol gas, animal waste and hydroelectric power. Dairylanxd reported that its earningas for 2008 declinedto $11.43 million, compared with $14.3e million in 2007.
Management noted that fuel to operatw Dairyland’s generating facilities, primarily coal, continues to be Dairyland’s largest annualo expense. The rising costs contributed to anaverage 9.8 percenyt increase in wholesale rates in 2008. Totalk operating revenue for 2008 increasesdto $373.8 million, up 14 percenty compared with $328.5 million in 2007. Electric sales also increased in 2008, with total sales up 8 Dairyland Power provides wholesale electricituy to 25 member distribution cooperativee and 16municipal utilities.
