Obama made the announcement Thursday in a statemen issued by theWhite House, saying the will spends $285 million of Recovery Act money to buy the vehiclea for the government fleet. All purchases will be made from manufacturersz with an existing contract withthe GSA, whicbh are (NYSE: GM), and (NYSE: F). This includes the purchase of 2,5090 hybrid sedans that will be ordered by The statement said this is thelargesrt one-time purchase of hybrid vehiclea for the federal government fleet in history. The Obama administratiom decided to buy the vehicles soon to help boosf the economy and demonstratethe administration’xs support of the U.S.

But I am 100 percent committeds to a strong American auto and we will standwith America’ auto workers and their families duringf these difficult times,” Obamaq said in the statement. “This is only a firsf step, but I will continue to ensure that we are workinhg to support the American auto industry durinb this difficult periodof restructuring.” Ford’s has about 3,9000 hourly and 200 salaried employees. GM’s has about 2,400p union workers and about 2,700 total.
